How Does Thermage Skin Lifting Work?
Thermage is a safe, non-invasive radiofrequency procedure that is FDA cleared in 2002. Thermage has been clinically proven to help smooth wrinkles in the skin for an overall younger looking appearance. The treatment delivers natural lifting and smoothing results with little to no downtime while stimulating the skin for new collagen – on all skin colors, on and off the face, all in a single procedure.
Over one million treatments have been performed since then. In comparison to today’s technology-based treatments, it typically involves two or more sessions to get the desired results that may require consistent maintenance for lasting results. With Thermage, patients will only need one treatment to get the results the patient’s desire.
Thermage CPT technology sends radiofrequency energies deep into the collagen rich layers of patienter skin. With the radiofrequency energy, patients’ skin will begin to feel the heat of the technology, and the heat helps to tighten the existing collagen while stimulating the skin to produce new collagen. The collagen will reduce the sagging of the skin, renews the contours of the face while improving the smoothness and texture of the skin’s surface. Patients will be able to see the new changes to the skin immediately after treatment.
Thermage CPT stands for Thermage Comfort Pulse Technology, the machine comes with additional technology to ensure the comfort of the treatment experience for the client. The client will experience a slight cooling effect to balance with the radiofrequency energy that translates to heat, while also experiencing a slight vibration on the skin that distracts the client from the discomfort of the heat. With both comfort technology, patients are sure to feel relaxed and comfortable throughout patients’ Thermage experience.

About the Procedure
They conduct a thorough consultation to understand the patient’s skin concerns and medical history. On the treatment day, the practitioner cleans the skin and may apply a topical anesthetic for comfort. They then use the Thermage device’s handpiece to deliver radiofrequency energy to the targeted areas, promoting collagen stimulation and skin tightening. The device’s cooling system ensures patient safety and minimizes discomfort.
The treatment duration varies based on the treated area. Patients can resume normal activities immediately, experiencing mild redness or swelling, which usually subsides within days.
Over time, patients notice gradual improvements as collagen production continues, achieving long-lasting results of up to 1 to 2 years.
During the procedure, some patients may experience a warming sensation and brief bursts of heat. To minimize discomfort, the device is equipped with a cooling system. Topical anesthesia can also be applied before the treatment.
Thermage is a non-surgical procedure, and there is usually no downtime required. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after the treatment. Some may experience mild redness or swelling, which typically resolves within a few days.
The initial results of Thermage are usually visible immediately after the treatment. However, the full benefits develop gradually as collagen production continues, with optimal results becoming apparent over the course of 3–6 months.
Thermage is suitable for individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity who desire skin tightening without surgery. It is important to have a consultation with a qualified provider to determine if Thermage is right for you and your specific skin concerns.
After the treatment, patients may experience soreness, swelling slight burning sensation, and redness in the treatment area, however, side effects usually dissipate within a few hours. Patients in extreme cases may experience the above symptoms but for a longer duration, and possibly bruising and skin peeling. It is highly recommended to follow the health care provider’s post-care regime to get maximized results. There is no downtime with the treatment, patients can resume with regular daily routine after the procedure.
Both technologies use heat energy as a way to encourage our skin cells to replenish and remodel. Whereas Ultherapy utilises ultrasound heat to stimulate collagen renewal deep within the skin, Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to kickstart collagen production in superficial skin layers. The primary goal of each technique is slightly different, but collagen renewal is, they’re simultaneous.
