How Does BBL Work?

Phototherapy is a term used to refer to a variety of light-based therapies which exploit different technologies in order to address a broad range of skin concerns. At this point, we should make clear that phototherapy does not include laser treatments. In fact, it would be more accurate to call it “photorejuvenation”. Phototherapy uses two types of technology: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or Broad Band Light (BBL).

BBL is the latest and more advanced treatment, used mainly for the rejuvenation of aged and sun-damaged skin in a non-invasive manner. BBL can be applied in any area of your body. Usually, though, the most frequently treated body parts are the face, neck, hands, chest and shoulders, as they are more exposed to the sun.

The energy delivered by the BBL beam gently heats the superficial layer of your skin. The heat is absorbed by the treated areas stimulating the skin cells which, in turn, promote new collagen production. Through this process, the beauty of your skin is restored, and it becomes smoother, more even and younger looking. Moreover, the photothermal energy eliminates capillaries that are responsible for redness and reduces the excess melanin, making the blemishes and uneven pigmentations fade away.

But BBL does not only repair your skin. This treatment literally alters its genetics, preventing future damage. According to a study, BBL treatment could reverse some of the alterations that occur, as we age, in the genome of our old skin cells, making them function as if they are young again. Regarding the long-run effects of BBL, at least one treatment each year could slow down the aging process over time.

About the Procedure

BBL is a gentle, non-invasive, and safe treatment. Although each of us has a different pain threshold, we could say that it is mostly a painless treatment. Still, the device has a built-in cooling system, allowing the application of high-intensity energy with the minimum discomfort.

Moreover, if you feel discomfort during your procedure, you can apply a topical numbing cream, especially in more sensitive areas. Patients will experience warm sensation to the treatment area but with minimal discomfort. Immediately after treatment, perhaps you may experience some redness, and you may feel like you have a mild sunburn in the treated area. This usually goes away in the next few hours but, on rare occasions, it may last a couple of days.

In the next days, you should stay away from direct sunlight or tanning. The first results will be visible several days after treatment. Spots and broken blood vessels will start to clear up within a couple of weeks.
