These stretch marks are often located near the arms, hips, breasts, buttocks, back, and abdomen depending on the patient’s case. The reason these marks appear involves hormonal changes (puberty or pregnancy), skin stretching, weight gain, and muscle gain. If the skin fails to recoil post-stretching, it leaves marks or micro-tears. The tears consist of elastin, collagen, and various related substances.

Types of Stretch Marks
Purple/Red Stretch Marks: Seen during initial onset of micro-tears in skin as blood vessels collect around an inflamed area. Can persist for months before reducing in color.
White/Silvery Stretch Marks: Seen during second phase as blood vessels diminish and inflammation dies down. These stretch marks are permanent and fail to fade unless treatment is considered.
